Boys to Men.
I know you are all hoping I am going to write some awesome blog on how I love Boyz II Men and although I DO love me some of that 90's R&B - thats not what is on my heart today. Today, I'm thinking about Cyrus and how most of the time I look at him and think 'what the heck am I doing.' I love this kid so much, but let me tell yah - Cy has been polar opposite from Emma in every sense of the word. He is active, wild, gets hurt all the time, L O U D, and requires a lot of attention. His needs are totally different from hers.
My heart is so burdened for this coming generation of young men, maybe because I feel this sense of responsibility now that I have one of my own boys to lead. These children who have the world at their fingertips but have been handed an iPad instead. These little boys who no longer love to play outside but have been encouraged to spend their time sitting in front of a screen. These ones who have God-given energy, vibrancy, and boldness but have been told "be quiet," "settle down," "quit playing rough & don't get dirty." The ones who are quickly put on medication because of how active they are and we no longer have the attention span or desire to deal with it.
Did you know that Fight the New Drug is saying that the average age boys will be exposed to pornography is between 8 - 11? That is insane to me! But what else is to be expected when you tell a boy they can't do anything else besides quiet down, go to their room, and be alone with an iPad, phone, computer etc. It is horrifying. We need to do better, parents! Why do you think we are seeing so much disrespect of women? It's because our boys are growing up having horrible and unrealistic views of sex and then when looking at it no longer satisfies them, they act on it! We have the ability to stop our boys from becoming dumbed down, inactive, hermits. The world needs more boys who will fight for justice, who will be respectful to all women, intelligent, strong, and integral. This will not happen if we don't start directing the narrative. We can not let society tell us how to raise our children - be involved in every aspect of your children's lives. Take the electronics away, talk about pornography and its damaging side effects. Talk about situations where you expect them to walk in integrity. Open the communication. Take the time needed to build a connection with your son.
Parents it starts with us. If we aren't the ones teaching them the way they should go - then someone else will. Lets raise our boys to be caring, empathetic, strong individuals who look at women with purity and not just as objects to gain from. Lets raise men who can communicate their feelings and be direct. Lets raise men who are decisive and unwavering in their faith. Lets raise them to be strong leaders of the family and fathers who will stick through all the hardships.
- Real men walk in integrity
- Real men respect women
- Real men stand up for what's right
It is vital and so important that we teach our boys these things at an early age so we can see and look forward to a generation of men that we can trust will be bold in their convictions.
